  1. Baby Quilt

May 26, 2012 by Melissa Harris

Today is a fun day.  In our family when you get married or have a baby we all get together and create a group quilt that all the family members participate in.  As the bride or mother you get to pick what theme and how to you want the quilt to look.  My wedding quilt was a picture quilt of all the places that my husband and I met or liked to do…really wonderful.  For my daughter, each member of the family (just the women, not sure why we did that) made an applique angel block.  I gave them a range of fabrics and an angel pattern, then they picked which fabrics they wanted to use and hand appliqued the angel and wrote their name on the block.  That quilt is still hanging up in her room…although at 10 years old, she is trying to get me to redo her room and take down the quilt, ah:(

So today we are getting together to make our blocks for my cousin’s baby.  She wanted to do a hand-print quilt and we found this adorable pattern using hand prints and jungle animals.

  2. Card Project

May 26, 2012 by Melissa Harris

I taught this lesson today at my daughter’s school today…Embossed Foil Cards for Father’s Day, but you could make it for any occasion. I purchased gold foil from Blick Art Supplies, but you could use heavy duty baking foil. On a soft surface (I used a piece of cardboard under the foil) they drew lines on the foil with a dull pencil. They could have a “groove” image, embossed image or both. Next they used colored sharpies to create a “glass” look. We mounted these on a black card for father’s day. I thought they came out great!

  3. Facebook

May 24, 2012 by Melissa Harris

I finally made the leap to add The Quilt Company to facebook…well I had added it back in November, but wasn’t really doing anything with it. So now I have it up and running, looking fairly orderly…can’t say I like the new “timeline” look to the page, I guess I am just so used the old way. If you get a chance you can go to our facebook page and “like” us, you will get updates from us and a preview of the new designs that we come out with!

Mom is on her way home today from Kansas City, MO…no more playing with her girlfriends any more, I bet she had a great time. I am going to try and get her to start blogging herself when she gets back, she has some funny stories with her new dog, Cody.

Boy I sure slept great last night in my own bed! I just got Lauren off to school and now to the task of getting everything put away from spring quilt market. I have this renewed energy after being at quilt market to get all caught up on orders and get to working on some fun quilt projects (just for myself, he!).  One of my projects this week is get an ad for our new quilt Sew Spooky in a quilt publication.  We have typically advertised in Quilter’s World in the past but I need another magazine to use this time.  Any ideas?  What is your favorite magazine to look through?  I contacted Quilts magazine, American Quilter, Quilt Newsletter, Love of Quilting, but I am not sure which is the right type of quilter for our type of designs.

Well I better get off to working instead of talking the day away!

  5. Back from Quilt Market

Our latest Block of the Month

Mom and I just had the best time in quilt market this year.  We stayed with a longtime quilting friend that had moved to Kansas City 20 years ago!  We had a good time talking about the “good old days”….well I guess I should say my mom had a great time reminiscing, I don’t know half the people she was talking about, but fun to listen to their stories.  Marilyn (our hostess) was just wonderful, feeding us homemade breakfast and dinner every day, I could just get so much more done around here if she was at my house doing that for me every day, ha!  Mom was having such a great time she decided to stay until Wednesday to play with her friends a little longer…good for her!  I arrived back to sunny San Diego today and can’t wait to see the family :)

Everyone LOVED Sew Spooky, we seemed to really hit a home run with this pattern, who knew Halloween would be so popular :)   We added quite a few new shops and we saw lots of our “regulars”, so we had a nice time catching up with everyone.  And then I come back to check on website orders and there are so many Sew Spooky orders, wohoo!  How does everyone even know about the pattern, we just released it 2 weeks ago…wow!  So I have my work cut out for me, tomorrow is dedicated to getting market and website orders out the door.

I will try and post some pictures of market when Mom gets back on Wednesday.

  6. Fabric Turkey

November 12, 2011 by Melissa Harris

Fabric TurkeyThis is the fun project that I was working on last weekend.  I teach art at my daughter’s school and I am always looking for ways to include fabric in their lessons.  I have a funny story about that:  A few years ago I was teaching a 1st grade class and I had brought in my wedding quilt, which is a mostly applique story quilt.  We were making our own mini versions of a story quilt in class that day.  So I was explaining how quilts were designed and how to select fabric, etc.  One child raised his hand and asked…”What is fabric?”  Well I just about fell off the chair, to say the least.  So after that experience, I decided that I was going to make a serious effort every year to include as much fabric/textile projects in my art lessons.  Unfortunately, real sewing is difficult  with a class of 33 students so most of my porjects are fusible web, so at least they get the art of design and the use of the materials, but just not the actual sewing part yet.  I will have 5th graders next year, so maybe a sewing lesson will be in order :)

  7. Monday Morning

November 7, 2011 by Melissa Harris

I had good intentions on working on the blog this weekend.  I don’t really like the layout yet and I need to get better links, but as usually happens, this weekend was filled with fun and not-so fun activities and I didn’t get to it.

I worked all weekend on a funart project for the kids at my daughter’s elementary school (I teach art there).  It is a fabric turkey, I pre-cut and pre-fusible webbed a variety of fabrics and today they will design and create their fabric turkeys, I’ll post some pictures after the class…I hope they come out cute!  Any way there was a LOT of prep work on this project, but was able to use up a good amount of stash fabric, yeah!

Well off to the gym for a little workout and then I will quickly have to get ready to teach art today.

  8. Finally blogging

    Designers for The Quilt Company

Well this is something that we have wanted to do for a long time and have never figured out how.  We have a web page set up through Yahoo and it has always been extra, or not supported or just too technical to get started, so it just never got done.  But now after coming home from International Quilt Market and seeing all the high technology in use, I decided I better get going on this blogging stuff.  So bare with me in getting all this set up and readable…we can go through the journey together!
